Chapter 11

James, normally so reserved, exploded in anger. “That’s impossible, George, and you know it! I didn’t have anything to do with Vern Gulliver’s death.” He gritted his teeth in frustration, his body rigid with rage. “Who’s the witness?”

“Emil Fontaine.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me.” James’ eyes narrowed. “And you believed him?”

“It’s not a matter of what I believe. He said he knows that Pendleton jacket you wear anywhere, and he saw the killer wearing it.”

“Emil Fontaine is a jerk who’s taken advantage of my family’s kindness and now he’s trying to pin this murder on me. He’s got a criminal history and in case your investigators missed it, we don’t get along particularly well. George, you know something’s rotten there and so do I.”

Amanda could see the stress on George’s face as he tried to meet James’ eyes. “We know about his criminal history, James, but it’s for drugs, not murder.” He paused. “There’s more. We found your wool jacket hanging in the tack room and tests show it has gunshot residue on it.”

“I’ve gone hunting with that coat before, George. You and Burt have both gone out shooting with me when I was wearing that coat. It could’ve picked up GSR from anywhere.”

George nodded. “That’s true.”

James’ tone was incredulous. “After years as a detective you think I couldn’t orchestrate a better murder than this? You think I’d shoot him in the chest on my own land?” James sounded disgusted. “Look, after all the murders I’ve seen and all the investigations I’ve done, don’t you think I could come up with a better plan than that if I was going to kill someone?”

George shook his head, his mouth a grim line. “I know you could James, but I need to go on what the evidence is. If we find the gun, we’ll know more. The special investigators are already getting a warrant to search again and confiscate your coat.” He sighed. “And I need you to come with me.” He pulled the back door of his police car open, not able to look James in the face. “I’m going to need for you to ride in the back this time, James. I’m sorry, but the independent investigation team gave me special permission to bring you in for questioning and I’ve got to do this so everything appears above board.”

There was a tense moment as the two men stood toe to toe, until James finally gave in. “Okay, I’ll go,” he said, and gave Amanda a quick, hard hug. Sliding into the back of the police cruiser, his long legs pushed against the back of the seat in front of him. He turned toward Amanda, seeing the astonished tears in her eyes. “I’ll give you a call as soon as I can, lady. My keys are in my coat pocket if you need to move my car,” he said, and then George silently closed the car door. Amanda could see James slump backward in the seat as the police car slowly pulled out from the Inn’s circular drive.
