Chapter 11
James, normally so reserved, exploded in anger. âThatâs impossible, George, and you know it! I didnât have anything to do with Vern Gulliverâs death.â He gritted his teeth in frustration, his body rigid with rage. âWhoâs the witness?â
âEmil Fontaine.â
âYouâve got to be kidding me.â Jamesâ eyes narrowed. âAnd you believed him?â
âItâs not a matter of what I believe. He said he knows that Pendleton jacket you wear anywhere, and he saw the killer wearing it.â
âEmil Fontaine is a jerk whoâs taken advantage of my familyâs kindness and now heâs trying to pin this murder on me. Heâs got a criminal history and in case your investigators missed it, we donât get along particularly well. George, you know somethingâs rotten there and so do I.â
Amanda could see the stress on Georgeâs face as he tried to meet Jamesâ eyes. âWe know about his criminal history, James, but itâs for drugs, not murder.â He paused. âThereâs more. We found your wool jacket hanging in the tack room and tests show it has gunshot residue on it.â
âIâve gone hunting with that coat before, George. You and Burt have both gone out shooting with me when I was wearing that coat. It couldâve picked up GSR from anywhere.â
George nodded. âThatâs true.â
Jamesâ tone was incredulous. âAfter years as a detective you think I couldnât orchestrate a better murder than this? You think Iâd shoot him in the chest on my own land?â James sounded disgusted. âLook, after all the murders Iâve seen and all the investigations Iâve done, donât you think I could come up with a better plan than that if I was going to kill someone?â
George shook his head, his mouth a grim line. âI know you could James, but I need to go on what the evidence is. If we find the gun, weâll know more. The special investigators are already getting a warrant to search again and confiscate your coat.â He sighed. âAnd I need you to come with me.â He pulled the back door of his police car open, not able to look James in the face. âIâm going to need for you to ride in the back this time, James. Iâm sorry, but the independent investigation team gave me special permission to bring you in for questioning and Iâve got to do this so everything appears above board.â
There was a tense moment as the two men stood toe to toe, until James finally gave in. âOkay, Iâll go,â he said, and gave Amanda a quick, hard hug. Sliding into the back of the police cruiser, his long legs pushed against the back of the seat in front of him. He turned toward Amanda, seeing the astonished tears in her eyes. âIâll give you a call as soon as I can, lady. My keys are in my coat pocket if you need to move my car,â he said, and then George silently closed the car door. Amanda could see James slump backward in the seat as the police car slowly pulled out from the Innâs circular drive.
